LONG TERM ESL PROGRAM
OUR MISSION
To allow you to further your education by providing a solid base of instruction and support that will enable you to speak the English language fluently.
To improve your English language skills to the level required for placement in a High School level English course or for acceptance in a post-secondary learning institution.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM
One to three-month programs (4 hours or full-day) - entry at any time
One semester five-month program - recommended entry Feb 1 or Sept 1
Two semester (academic year) program - recommended entry Feb 1 or
Sept 1
PROFICIENCY STANDARDS
If you plan to take English 30 or to attend post-secondary in North America, you must attain or have attained a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of between 550 - 600 (237 on the computer-based score).
Upon completion of our ESL Program, TOEFL exams can be written in Alberta or elsewhere in Canada
Additional English proficiency examinations my be required by some
post-secondary institutions.

Students will use spoken and written English to:
gather, interpret and communicate information
establish and maintain relationships
make decisions, solve problems, and plan and carry out projects
explore, respond to, and extend ideas and experiences.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Level 1: Introductory ESL I
Focus is on using rudimentary elements of the English language to establish a basic framework of English vocabulary.
Students will learn ways of communicating effectively, both orally and in written form, while expanding their English vocabulary.
Level 2: Introductory ESL II
Builds upon what is learned in Introductory ESL I
For students who have a rudimentary understanding of English phrases, sentence construction and oral communication.
Focus is on expanding English Vocabulary, the ability to read short textx in English, and practical oral communication in English.
Level 3: Intermediate ESL I
For students who have a basic grasp of the written and spoken English language.
Focus is on reading English texts and popular writings such as magazines and newspaper articles and on relating the general meaning of these texts to other students.
Level 4: Intermediate ESL II
Continuation of Intermediate ESL I, concentrating on expanding students' abilities to comprehend the meaning of written English texts on a variety of subjects.
Introduction to methods of interpreting simple, factual information from charts, tables and maps, narrating events and activities from different points of view, and identifying and defining words that are crucial to comprehending written and spoken English.
Level 5: Advanced ESL (TOEFL Preparation)
For advanced ESL students who wish to pass the TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAGL or any recognized English proficiency exam.
Topics of study include advanced grammar, comprehension and integration of different English texts, research methods and the presentation of research in English, the narration of personal experiences and current or historical events, and the expansion of vocabulary for application in purposeful and appropriate contexts. |
